Hyderabad: Telangana’s Drugs Control Administration (DCA) carried out a surprise raid at an unlicensed chemical manufacturing unit located on the outskirts of Hyderabad and seized drugs worth Rs 50.25 lakh. Special teams of DCA raided the unlicensed factory on specific information and seized 236 kg of stock of ‘Diacerein’ drug.

Director General, DCA, VB Kamalsan Reddy said, two DCA teams detected unlicensed manufacturing of ‘Diacerein’ at Rakshit Drugs Pvt Ltd located in Bonthapally area of Gummadidala mandal in Sangareddy district. He said that the company didn’t have any drug manufacturing license.

He said, “DCA officers detected unlicensed manufacturing of the drug ‘Diacerein’ at Rakshit Drugs Pvt Ltd in Sangareddy District. Officials detected nine drums of yellow coloured powder labelled as ‘CDE-I’ in the production area of the firm. On verification of the Route of Synthesis (ROS) of the material and Batch Manufacturing Records, it was found that the material labelled as CDE-I is a ‘Diacerein’ drug.”

Sources said that the DCA officials also found that Rakshit Drugs Pvt Ltd has manufactured and sold several batches of the drug under code name ‘CDE-I’ without a drug license.

It is being said that as per Drugs and Cosmetics Act, drugs shall be manufactured in ‘ISO-8’ clean rooms adhering to Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs). But the firm was manufacturing the drug ‘Diacerein’ not adhering to GMPs.

An official said, drugs manufactured at unlicensed facilities may not meet quality standards and such drugs may have serious implications on patient’s health. The DCA officers seized the stocks and lifted the samples for analysis.
