New Delhi: In a significant move, the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) has allowed DISCOMs to provide new electricity connections in 105 urbanized villages and colonies regularized by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD). This decision aims to benefit lakhs of people living in these areas, according to a statement by Raj Niwas on Tuesday.

The decision follows directions from Delhi Lt. Governor V.K. Saxena, who received multiple representations from Delhi’s MPs, certain MLAs, and various Resident Welfare Associations. Additionally, during the LG's visits to these areas, residents frequently raised the issue of getting electricity connections.

The DDA has clarified that new connections will be allowed on lands where a No Objection Certificate (NoC) has been issued by the DDA or any government agency in the past, or where development plans have been approved by a government body.

Who Benefits?

The move will benefit people residing in colonies that were regularized before the Land Pooling Regulations of 2018 came into effect, as well as land allotted to landless persons under the 20-Point Program, industries or godowns in non-conforming industrial areas as per the Master Plan for Delhi (MPD) 2021, and JJ colonies.

Previous Restrictions and Exemptions

Earlier, in June 2023, a decision was made not to allow new electricity connections within the development areas of 105 urbanized villages in the land pooling areas, as new construction authorizations were pending from the DDA. However, exemptions were provided for Lal Dora, extended Lal Dora, and PM-UDAY colonies within the land pooling zones.

The new order clarifies that colonies regularized by the MCD prior to the Land Pooling notification of October 24, 2018, are now eligible for new connections. Land allocated to landless persons under the 20-Point Program before this date is also covered. In these cases, DISCOMs are directed to consult with the relevant departments of the GNCTD for further clarifications if needed.

This decision is expected to provide much-needed relief to residents of the regularized colonies, allowing them access to essential services such as electricity, which were previously restricted due to regulatory hurdles.
