New Delhi: IndiGo Airlines faces scrutiny from the Health Ministry's Food safety regulator FSSAI on Wednesday following a complaint lodged by a Delhi-based dietician who found a worm in a sandwich served during a flight from Delhi to Mumbai on December 29. The complaint, coupled with a video shared as evidence on social media, prompted the airline to issue an apology. IndiGo also asserted that a thorough investigation into the matter is underway.

On January 2, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) asked the airline to show cause why its licence should not be considered for suspension or cancellation and action be initiated as per Food Safety & Standards (FSS) Act for serving unsafe food to a passenger on the flight, according to the show cause notice. The airline has been given seven days to respond to the notice.

The shocking incident took place aboard flight 6E 6107. The passenger Kushboo Gupta, who is a professional dietitian, raised the alarm and shared her distressing experience onboard the flight via Instagram.

On her Instagram post, Kushboo warned the airlines of an official complaint. “As a Public Health professional, I want to know despite of knowing the quality of Sandwich was not good and informing the Flight attendant prior, she still continued to serve sandwiches to other passengers. There were kids, elderly and other passengers. What if any one catches infection," the infuriated passenger wrote.

“I brought this issue under consideration to create awareness. I don't need any compensation or refund. Just one assurance that Passenger Health & Safety should be your Top most Priority,” she further noted.

After her post went viral, the spokesperson of the airline in a statement said, “Upon investigation, our crew had immediately ceased the service of the specific sandwich in question. The matter is currently under thorough examination, and we are working closely with our caterer to ensure appropriate corrective measures are taken. We sincerely apologise for any inconvenience caused to the passenger."
