Mumbai: Mumbai is likely to experience rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms on Saturday, according to an update from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) on X. The BMC also warned of high tide at 7:30 PM, with waves reaching 2.85 meters, followed by a low tide at 1:31 AM on Sunday, measuring 1.59 meters.

Light Showers to Continue in Mumbai

Following heavy rainfall and thunderstorms that took the city by surprise on Thursday and Friday, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast light showers and thunderstorms to continue over the weekend. On Thursday, Mumbai and its neighbouring districts were hit by a sudden downpour, with some areas receiving over 60 mm of rain in just one hour, leading to waterlogging in several low-lying pockets.

Data from the IMD showed that between Thursday and Friday morning, the Colaba observatory recorded 43 mm of rain, while the Santacruz station registered 27 mm. The unexpected rain came despite the IMD only issuing a ‘yellow’ alert, which indicated light to moderate rainfall for Mumbai.

Areas such as Elphinstone Road and NM Joshi Marg in the Prabhadevi area were particularly affected, with visuals showing commuters wading through flooded streets. The waterlogging caused significant disruption to traffic, making it difficult for people to move through several parts of the city.

IMD Mumbai senior scientists explained that the renewed rainfall was due to a developing low-pressure system in the Arabian Sea, combined with thunderstorms typical of the monsoon’s retreat. Although Mumbai was placed under a yellow alert on Friday, the city experienced little rain until later in the day.

Yellow Alert Issued

While the intensity of the showers is expected to reduce over the weekend, light rains and thundershowers are likely to persist until Monday. Meanwhile, Thane and Raigad districts have been placed under a yellow alert for the weekend, with moderate rainfall and thunderstorms predicted.

The IMD has also warned that Maharashtra and several other states could experience heavy rainfall until October 16. The recent rains, which hit Mumbai on Thursday, affected Navratri celebrations and led to widespread waterlogging across the city.
