Hundreds Fall Ill After Consuming Contaminated Buckwheat Flour in Bijnor
Health facilities across Bijnor were overwhelmed by the influx of patients. Those in critical condition were transferred from the overcrowded community health centres (CHC) to the district hospital for more intensive care. The health department quickly mobilised resources to manage the surge in cases, with both government and private hospitals involved in treating those affected.
Authorities Take Action
Speaking to the media, District Magistrate (DM) Ankit Kumar Agarwal said, "Many people have fallen ill after consuming buckwheat flour. People are suffering from vomiting and diarrhoea, and we have identified around 125-150 such cases. Some patients have been referred to the district hospital. We have sent food samples to the lab for testing, and strict action will be taken against those responsible."
Superintendent of Police (SP) and Chief Medical Officer (CMO) joined the DM in monitoring the situation closely. Officials are focusing on finding the source of the contamination as investigations continue.
Food Safety Investigation Underway
In response to the growing concern, samples of the contaminated buckwheat flour have been sent to the lab for thorough testing. Food safety authorities are working to determine the source of the adulteration and have promised swift action against those involved. The CMO has also issued instructions to local hospitals and village leaders to ensure that patients receive the best possible care during this crisis.
Impact on Religious Observance
The incident occurred on the first day of Navratri , a major Hindu festival during which many people observe fasts and consume food items like buckwheat flour as part of their religious practices. The consumption of the contaminated flour has not only caused widespread illness but also disrupted the observance of the sacred festival for many families.
