New Delhi: Former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister and National Conference leader Omar Abdullah's latest remarks on terrorist Afzal Guru has erupted a major controversy and invited a sharp retort from the BJP , ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections in J-K, first since abrogation of Article 370.

Omar Abdullah has said that terrorist Afzal Guru’s conviction in 2001 Parliament attack did not serve any purpose.

Making a remark on Friday, Omar Abdullah said, “The unfortunate thing was that the Jammu and Kashmir government had nothing to do with Afzal Guru's execution. Otherwise, you would have had to do it with the permission of the state government, which I can tell you in no uncertain terms would not have been forthcoming. We wouldn't have done it. I don't believe that any purpose was served by executing him."

Lashing out at Omar Abdullah, BJP 's Sudhanshu Trivedi said when he (Omar) says Afzal Guru's case was not fit for hanging, it clearly exposes their nefarious, nasty anti-national design.

“The recent statement of the main alliance partner of INDIA alliance of the Congress party, their old family friend and former CM of J&K, Omar Abdullah, is definitely nothing but is a clear cut expose of their nefarious, nasty, separatist anti national design. When Omar Abdullah says that Afzal Guru's case was not fit for hanging, I would like to ask Congress that were the investigating agencies working your regime wrong. Has the Supreme Court of India during the UPA government given a wrong judgment?”

“I would like to remind the people of the country that in the judgment on the Parliament attack, SC used the word that this was a rare of the rarest crime... So whether the SC was wrong or the President of India... This is the same party which has given in its manifesto that they will restore Article 370 and Farooq Abdullah, the senior leader of the same party said in October 2020 that they will restore 370 with the help of China... Congress is showing their real nefarious design through proxy. They cannot shed their responsibility by saying their personal statement because Rahul Gandhi was present there giving moral support to those who were chanting 'Afzal ham sharminda hai, tere katil zinda hai,” Sudhanshu Trivedi said.
