New Delhi — The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued red alerts for parts of Maharashtra and Telangana, warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall over the next five days. An orange alert has also been issued for several districts in Gujarat and Andhra Pradesh, forecasting significant rainfall across most parts of the state. Andhra Pradesh reported 7 deaths on Saturday due to heavy rainfall.

Red Alert in Maharashtra and Telangana

In Maharashtra, the IMD has issued red alerts for the districts of Chandrapur, Nagpur, and Yavatmal, predicting extremely heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning at isolated places. The IMD also issued an orange alert for Nanded, Amravati, and Gadchiroli, forecasting heavy to very heavy rainfall with gusty winds reaching speeds of 30 to 40 km/h.

Other regions, including Dhule, Jalgaon, Nashik, Ahmednagar, Kolhapur, Sangli, Solapur, and Aurangabad, are expected to experience light to moderate rainfall, thunderstorms, and gusty winds.

Telangana is facing a severe weather situation with heavy rains engulfing most parts of the state, attributed to a deep depression off the Andhra Pradesh coast. The IMD has issued a red alert for almost half of the state and an orange alert for other districts, with heavy rains expected until September 3. One person has been reported dead due to the torrential rains, prompting the government to declare a holiday for primary and secondary schools in Hyderabad on Monday as a precautionary measure.

Asna Cyclone Gone, Heavy Rainfall Threats Still Loom over Gujarat

In Gujarat, while the state has narrowly avoided the impact of the rare Cyclone Asna, the IMD has issued orange alerts for South Gujarat regions, predicting heavy to very heavy rains in isolated areas. Districts such as Vadodara, Bharuch, Anand, Narmada, Panchmahal, Dahod, and Chhota Udepur are expected to bear the brunt of the downpour. Additionally, light to moderate thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds of 30 to 40 km/h are forecasted for Gandhinagar, Aravalli, Ahmedabad, and districts in the Saurashtra-Kutch region.

Despite being out of the cyclone's grip, Gujarat will experience squally winds with speeds up to 40 to 50 km/h as the state continues to deal with challenging weather conditions.

Andhra Pradesh and Odisha to Witness Heavy Downpours

In Andhra Pradesh, an orange alert has been issued by the IMD, forecasting heavy to very heavy rainfall (ranging from 7 cm to 20 cm) accompanied by thunderstorms in several districts. The depression over the Bay of Bengal is anticipated to cross the north Andhra Pradesh and adjacent south Odisha coasts around midnight, between Vishakhapatnam and Gopalpur, near Kalingapatnam. Malkangiri, Koraput, and Nabarangpur districts are expected to experience significant rainfall on Sunday.

The state has already seen severe weather-related incidents, with seven fatalities reported on Saturday. In Vijayawada, four people tragically died due to landslides in the Mogalrajapuram area, where heavy rainfall caused boulders to tumble onto their homes.

Odisha is also bracing for heavy rainfall as the same weather system affecting Andhra Pradesh moves inland. The IMD has issued an orange alert for the region, especially for districts near Andhra Pradesh, warning of the potential for heavy to very heavy rainfall. Residents have been urged to take precautions as the depression progresses.

Yellow Alert in Himachal Pradesh, IMD Predicts Heavy Rainfall

Himachal Pradesh is dealing with challenging weather conditions, with predictions of continued heavy rainfall over the next 2-3 days. The IMD has issued a yellow alert, signaling the possibility of significant rainfall and advising residents to remain cautious. The persistent rain has raised concerns about potential landslides and flash floods in the region.

Delhi Weather Updates

In Delhi, the IMD forecasts a cloudy sky on Sunday, with the possibility of light rain in parts of the city. Although the rain is expected to be less intense, the ongoing monsoon has already caused periodic heavy showers in the National Capital Region (NCR) in recent weeks, leading to concerns about waterlogging and traffic issues.

National Rainfall Overview

India has recorded around 16% more rainfall than normal in August, with the northwest region receiving 253.9 mm of rainfall—the second highest in August since 2001, according to IMD. Overall, the country has seen 749 mm of precipitation since the start of the monsoon season on June 1, compared to the normal 701 mm.
