UP Police Probes Provocative Muharram Procession Slogans in Amethi, 6 Arrested

As the procession passed the Musafirkhana police station, some youths who were part of it allegedly raised provocative slogans, the police said.

Noida: The Uttar Pradesh police has arrested six people from Amethi in connection with provacative slogans raised during Muharram procession on Sunday. The swift action came after a video of provocative slogans being raised during a the procession went viral on social media, officials said on Monday.

A case has been registered on the basis of a police complaint in connection with objectionable slogans raised during the procession on Sunday evening, right in front of the Musafirkhana Police Station of the district. As the procession passed the Musafirkhana police station, some youths who were part of it allegedly raised provocative slogans, the police said.

The case has been registered under sections 302 and 35(2) of the Indian Penal Code 2023 against some unknown youths involved in the Muharram procession.

The case was registered late at night after the news spread. Taking cognizance of a viral video, the police station has registered a case. In this case, the police have arrested six boys and are investigating them.

The 37-second video clip showed several youths shouting slogans such as "Do you want to live in India or say Hussain?" ('Hindustan mein rehna hai, Ya Hussain kehna ha') during the Muharram procession in Amethi. After the video surfaced online, Amethi police said that the youths seen in the video were arrested and are being questioned.

The matter is under investigation and strict action will be taken against those responsible, said Superintendent of Police Anup Kumar Singh.

Meanwhile, Peethadheeshwar Mouni Maharaj of Babuganj Sagara Ashram strongly condemned the sloganeering and urged Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath to take immediate action.

He said these acts create disintegration, tension and disturb communal harmony in the society.
