US Has A Lot To Learn From India In Indian Ocean Region: Biden After Meeting PM Modi In Delaware
President Biden held a bilateral with PM Modi on the sidelines of the Quad summit in Delaware. The two leaders discussed India-US ties and way forward.
Delaware: Joe Biden has said that the United States has a lot to learn from India in the Indian Ocean Region, as he met PM Modi on the sidelines of the Quad Summit, which took place on Saturday. The meeting of the four country-grouping including India, US, Japan and Australia – was held at his hometown Delaware.
PM Modi is on a 3-day US visit, his first after returning to power for the third consecutive time. PM Modi on Saturday held a bilateral meeting with President Biden, attended the Quad meeting and also had separate meetings with Japan and Australian counterparts.
The Prime Minister departed from Delaware and is in New York today where he will address a mega diaspora event named ‘Modi&US’ at the Long Island. An enthused diaspora is awaiting Prime Minister's address.
Post his address, PM Modi will be holding a CEOs roundtable. Reports also said that he may meet Vice President Kamala Harris and Republican Presidential candidate Donald Trump . However, there is no information regarding any scheduled meetings with these two leaders.
Modi-Biden Meeting: What's the outcome
- Modi-Biden recognised remarkable progress in co-producing arrangements for jet engines, munitions, and ground mobility systems.
- Biden welcomed the progress towards India concluding procurement of 31 General Atomics MQ-9B remotely piloted aircraft and their associated equipment.
- India is procuring the 'hunter-killer' drones (16 Sky Guardian and 15 Sea Guardian) from US Defence major General Atomics at a cost of over USD 3 billion primarily to crank up its surveillance apparatus along the frontier with China as well as in the Indian Ocean region. Deal is expected to conclude by next month.
- Modi and Biden welcomed teaming of Liquid Robotics and Sagar Defence Engineering for the co-development.
- Co-production of unmanned surface vehicle systems that will strengthen undersea and maritime domain awareness was also mentioned in the joint statement.
- India-US applauded the conclusion of the Security of Supply Arrangement (SOSA), enhancing the mutual supply of defence goods and services.
- President Biden welcomed India's decision to set a uniform Goods and Services Tax (GST) of 5 percent on the maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) sector, including on all aircraft and aircraft engine parts.
- Modi and Biden also lauded commitments from the US industry to further increase India's MRO capabilities, including for the repair of aircraft and unmanned aerial vehicles.
- The two leaders also hailed the recent teaming agreement between Lockheed Martin and Tata Advanced Systems Ltd on the C-130J Super Hercules aircraft programme.
- Modi and Biden commended work to advance cooperation in advanced domains, including space and cyber.
- PM Modi and President Biden complimented the growing defence innovation collaboration between the two governments, businesses, and academic institutions fostered by the India-US Defense Acceleration Ecosystem (INDUS-X) initiative launched in 2023.
