Wayanad: Two massive landslides struck the Wayanad district of Kerala, creating havoc in the hilly areas.
At least 19 people have lost their lives including children and hundreds are feared trapped.
Amid ongoing rescue operations and attempts to airlift those stranded, locals have described the condition of the areas affected by the landslides.
Describing the horrific situation of Wayanad after it was hit by two massive landslides, locals are saying that their houses and the schools in the area have been completely destroyed.
Water and mud is entering their houses and sweeping away people; hundreds remain trapped and quite a few are stranded.
As an effect of the landslides, the Chooralmala Town Bridge has collapsed in the Chooralmala area.
The bridge collapse has restricted access, further worsening the situation in Wayanad, making rescue operations more difficult.
As rigorous rescue operations continue, the death toll in the Wayanad landslides has reached 24 including three children.
Those deceased include a one-year-old child of a Nepali family who died in the Thondernad village.
The Mundakkai, Chooralmala, Attamala, and Noolpuzha villages were among the areas affected and cut off by the landslides, authorities said.
According to the Kerala Health Minister Veena George, the Health Department has opened the district level control room and released two helpline numbers, 8086010833 and 9656938689, for emergency health services.
All hospitals including Vaithiri, Kalpatta, Meppadi and Mananthavadi hospitals are ready. All the health workers had arrived for service during the night. More teams of health workers will be deployed in Wayanad
