'Where Will the Dogs Go?: N Chandrasekaran Reveals Ratan Tata's Rare Compassionate Side
When discussing plans to relocate during renovations, Tata famously asked, “Where will the dogs go?”
New Delhi: Days after the passing of Ratan Tata, Tata Sons Chairman N Chandrasekaran shared heartfelt reflections on his relationship with the former chairman. In a LinkedIn post, Chandrasekaran emphasized, “Anyone who met Mr.Tata came away with a story about his humanity, warmth, and dreams for India. There really was no one like him.”
Ratan Tata, who served as Chairman Emeritus until his death on October 9 at Breach Candy Hospital in Mumbai, was laid to rest with full state honors on October 10. Chandrasekaran recounted their evolving relationship, which began with business discussions and deepened into personal connections. “We discussed interests ranging from cars to hotels, but he would always show how much he noticed and felt about daily life,” he noted.
Chandrasekaran recalled a significant moment shortly after he became chairman, involving a two-year wage dispute at Tata Motors. He described how Tata, during a meeting with union leaders, expressed regret over the delay in resolving the issue and emphasized the company’s hardships. “He was committed to ensuring employees were well taken care of,” Chandrasekaran said, underscoring Tata’s consistent perspective on employee welfare across the group.
An anecdote about the renovation of Bombay House, the Tata headquarters, highlighted Tata’s character and attention to detail. When discussing plans to relocate during renovations, Tata famously asked, “Where will the dogs go?” referring to the beloved dogs often seen at the reception. “We will build a kennel,” he assured, illustrating his deep compassion for both people and animals. Upon completion, Tata wanted to see the kennel first, expressing joy over its thoughtful design.
Chandrasekaran lauded Tata's remarkable memory and keen observational skills, saying, “His eye received everything clearly, as his mind perceived everything clearly.” He encapsulated Ratan Tata’s legacy as a leader defined by profound humanity and unwavering attention to detail, affirming that his impact will resonate for years to come.
