UP News Updates: Police have decided to stop nearly the whole Ghaziabad portion of the Delhi-Meerut Expressway (DME) in observance of the kanwar yatra, which may cause traffic problems to and from Delhi this weekend. From July 28 night, all six lanes of the highway would be closed to traffic from UP Gate on the Delhi border to Kashi toll plaza near the Meerut border for at least five days, according to reports on Tuesday. However, the nearby NH-9 lanes will stay open.

Alternate Routes

Police had temporarily redirected traffic from the DME last year as well, causing gridlock on NH-9. The majority of cars were rerouted via the Noida Expressway, DND Flyway, and Eastern Peripheral Expressway. According to Police Commissioner Ajay Kumar Mishra, a complete traffic diversion plan is being formulated by the authorities for this period.

Ghaziabad To Haridwar

There are three routes in Ghaziabad that pilgrims from Delhi and neighboring UP districts take to get to Haridwar. The Pipeline Road connects Loni Border to Niwari, and pilgrims who want to walk the yatra typically use it. Most Dak Kanwariyas use DME. They run the distance barefoot and are followed by a relay team in trucks or bikes. NH-34 is also used by a lot of kanwariyas via GT Road.

It is noteworthy that thousands of devotees travel to Haridwar in Uttarakhand during the Kanwar Yatra, a significant pilgrimage that takes place during the Hindu month of Shravan, in an attempt to obtain holy water from the Ganga. Devotees then donate this holy water to Lord Shiva's Shivaling at their houses and at several temples along the way after returning home.
