“I will apply, for the benefit of the sick, all measures (that) required, avoiding those twin traps of overtreatment and therapeutic nihilism” - an excerpt of the Hippocratic Oath (modern version) taken by doctors.

Republic TV with Apollo Hospitals commemorates the spirit of doctors who stand true to the oath.

Doctors of India, is a one of its kind series to celebrate the community that works day and night towards making a world, a healthy place.

This episode of Doctors of India talks about Dr. Rakesh Jalali, a humanitarian and a health care provider for cancer patients.

Dr. Rakesh Jalali, a renowned oncologist, who is known for being a global opinion leader for  high precision radiotherapy techniques. He works toward enhancing the quality of life for cancer patients. Dr. Jalali has received numerous national and international awards and has been contributing in academics by publishing several journals that are about developing appropriate research models for providing better healthcare to people suffering from cancer or tumour related problems.

He has been a pioneer in the high precision radiotherapy. However, in the radiation therapy, proton have started to replace x-rays. A proton, being a highly charged positive particle, destroys cancer cells. Proton therapy has been replacing many other cancer treatments, as it deposits much less radiation in the tissues that are not being targeted. This is done through the pencil beam scanning therapy. The technology moves a proton beam of pencil - point sharpness on the layers of the tumour and paints the tumour with radiation in 3 dimensions. The precision makes this an ideal treatment for tumors that are located next to any critical organ or tissue.

"Even as a doctor it is sometimes hard for me, we are taught to be professional and emotionless but nevertheless there are instances that move you. Every patient is a new chapter, a new learning process. You just have to keep your mind, heart and soul open." - Dr. Rakesh Jalali, Medical Director, Head of Radiation Oncology, Apollo Proton Cancer Centre, Chennai.
