“I will apply, for the benefit of the sick, all measures (that) required, avoiding those twin traps of overtreatment and therapeutic nihilism” - an excerpt of the Hippocratic Oath (modern version) taken by doctors.

Republic TV with Apollo Hospitals commemorates the spirit of doctors who stand true to the oath.
Doctors of India, is a one of its kind series to celebrate the community that works day and night towards making a world, a healthy place.

This episode of Doctors of India talks about Dr. E.C. Vinaya Kumar, a celebrated senior consultant of ENT, head and neck surgeries. He is a pioneer of the cochlear implants, rhinoplasty, skull base surgery, endoscopic surgery and bone anchored hearing implants in India. He is also world record holder for performing the highest number of cochlear implants in a day. Dr. Vinaya Kumar is known to make the lives of the patients easier who find it difficult to communicate with others.

A cochlear implant is an electronic medical device that does the work of damaged parts of the inner ear (cochlea) to provide sound signals to the brain. The implants have two parts - the electrodes and the speech processor. The speech processor receives the sound, converts these sounds into radio waves, which are then converted to electrical stimuli that directly stimulates the nerve endings enabling a child to hear. The child then has to be taught to listen and recognize speech. This process can take a long time, even 2 years. Hence, it is important to implant these devices as soon as they are born.

Dr. E.C. Vinaya Kumar has been closely involved with SAHI i.e. A Society to Aid the Hearing Impaired, an initiative by Apollo Hospitals which aims to identify and treat hearing impaired children from rural areas. Keeping in mind, the difference in behaviour towards both the genders, SAHI provides free implants to girl childs. This is a step taken to ensure that the girls can live a normal, independent lives.

Dr. E.C. Vinaya Kumar, Head & Snr. Consultant, ENT Department, Apollo Hospitals, Hyderabad - As we know, the cost of these implants are quite expensive and we cannot totally depend on the government. This is where the society has to play its part. The corporates who earn huge profits, should through their corporate social responsibility programs donate for these kids, so that every kid in India, who needs implants will have bilateral implants, which is implants for both the years. That will be the time when we as a country will have treated these unfortunate children.

In recent years, the faith in doctors and medical practitioners has been wavering. There have been quite a few cases of mob attacks on hospitals and doctors. The corruption that has gripped the noble profession is undeniable. However, it can be said without an ounce of doubt that there are doctors who prioritize the profession and its demands. There are innumerable doctors who go all the way to ensure that a patient walks back home - healthy and happy.

Watch to know more about the doctors who are working to make the world a healthier place.
