A cochlear implant is an electronic medical device that does the work of damaged parts of the inner ear (cochlea) to provide sound signals to the brain. The implants have two parts - the electrodes and the speech processor. The speech processor receives the sound, converts these sounds into radio waves, which are then converted to electrical stimuli that directly stimulates the nerve endings enabling a child to hear.

Treatment becomes difficult when an individual is not able to communicate his problems with anyone, a case which is common with infants. A child learns to speak while listening to the people around him, however, if the child is born deaf, it becomes difficult for him learn to speak as well. Commonly, a child learns speech at the age of 1 to 3 year. In case of inborn deafness, a device called a cochlear implant is attached to the infant's skin.
