Honda Activa launches a one of its kind, #ActivIndia campaign during the election season to encourage more and more people to cast their votes to make a difference. It prompts the citizens to realize that they are the ones who can give the “desh chalane ka license” - the license to run the country.

Chandigarh is a unique city as it is the capital of the two neighboring states of Punjab and Haryana all the while being a part of neither state. Chandigarh is directly governed by the Union government, like any other union territory. Union territories of India are administrative division, which are federal territories and are governed directly by the union government. The city of Chandigarh also stands unique for its structured planning and development, designed by French Le Corbusier.

Pradip Bhandari reached Chitkara University of Chandigarh to know what the people have to say about the lacking voter percentages and what can be done to ensure maximum participation in elections. The women have been actively participating in politics but even then, the numbers are way below than that of the men. The students believe that empowerment has not reached enough parts of India, and there should be more women participation for giving a voice to the issues related to women.

The people of Chandigarh also believe that people should restrain from casting their votes based on religion, gender or caste but based on the work done by the candidate. Even though Chandigarh being a union territory is given more budgets and there are more policies, but those should be implemented as promised. The crime rates have been through a surge in the recent times and there should be better law and order in the city.

The city also talks about transgender voting rights, there are a large population of transgenders residing in the city yet their participation during elections is alarmingly low. There should be initiatives taken to ensure that the community feels safe and secure, does not feel othered and is able to confidently be a part of Indian politics.

There are more issues that the public talks about that should be addressed to ensure that the people take an initiative to come out and cast their votes. Steps should be taken by both the voters and the candidates.

Honda #ActivIndia is an initiative to spread awareness about the right and responsibility to vote in all parts of the country. It is a call to every young individual out there to realize how important each vote is and urges them to contribute to the reshaping of the nation’s government.
