One India | Season 2:, A Journey From A Village To Global Fame

‘Facebook presents One India’ is a series which showcases stories of ordinary people coming together to impact the lives of many for the better. The Season 2 of One India revolves around the spirit of change and revolutionizing things using technology. This season is all about the stories that will reach and empower the communities.  

 The second episode shows the journey of Pabiben and how she managed to take her work to an international platform. Based in a village of Kutch, Gujarat, Pabiben first started by learning famed embroidery of her community. Later, elders of the community banned embroidery and only allowed embroidery on a professional level, which led Pabiben to join the women group in 1998 and soon, she became a master artisan.  

When Pabiben mastered this art, she decided to take another step towards success by going online and using social media technology to get connected to other parts of the world and have a global reach. Today, her products are sold globally on her website This venture is one of the first women-only Artisan enterprise with a mission to develop a strong viable business model for women to shape their future.   

 “After years of working alone, my husband asked me, “why don’t you involve more people and work together?” He wanted me to be independent and do something along with other women for the rural community. The villages need to develop first for the country to develop further. My dream is to work for my village and help provide livelihood to the rural women.”  - Pabiben   

On this episode, our panel of experts discuss about the journey of Pabiben and how social media is used as a tool to reach out to people.The panel comprises of Nilesh Priyadarshi (Mentor- & Founder – Karigar Clinic), Harikishore S. (Executive Director – Kudumbashree mission – Govt of Kerala),  Dr. Kavya Dashora (Assistant Professor – Center for Rural Development & Technology (CRDT) - IIT Delhi) and Juhi Pandey (Director – Artisans Industries – Barefoot College).  The panel also discuss about how this venture became successful in providing livelihood to more than 50 rural women. They talk about the branding strategy of in local as well has international markets. More over they talk about the role that government plays and how the right blend of passion, idea and the correct platform which can bring a change in lives of people.
