This journey of One India with Facebook has brought out perspectives on important themes of sustainable economic growth, digital literacy, and fake news menace. This episode showcases the story of a Gond Artist who inspires through his art and transforms under-trials as he uses art as a medium for counter speech.

Ajay Mandavi, a craftsman from Kanker, Chhattisgarh, is the only artist who is bringing about a change through his art, in the minds of the people who were jail residents. He trained nearly two hundred prisoners of the district jail in wood crafts and believed that only goodness can conquer violence. He shaped the mindsets of ex-Maoists through art and gave their lives a new meaning and helped them lead a life of peace.

“Art is my life. Growing up, I had no money to buy toys. So, I would make whatever I could and play with them. Chhattisgarh is home to a lot of tribes like Gond, Muriya, Habba, Bhatra, Dhruva etc. These tribes were peaceful and lived in harmony and after being exposed to constant violence and getting involved willingly or unwillingly, some of them are now labeled ‘criminals.’ The best way to stop violence is to overshadow it with positivism and goodness,” - Ajay Kumar Mandavi (Artist & Educator)

On this episode, our panel of experts discuss the story of Ajay Mandavi and the challenges he faced initially. The panel comprises of Ajay Kumar Mandavi (Artist & Educator), Shubhranshu Choudhary (Founder – CGNET SWARA), Dr. Nanditesh Nilay (Author & Columnist) and Dr. C.P. Singh (Professor – Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University, Delhi) The panel was moderated by Shivani Gupta (Associate Editor – Republic TV).

The panel discusses how usage of Art, Theatre, Music, and dance can reshape the lives of the people and the role of art in spreading love and peace across the world. They spoke about how creativity enables deconstruction of negative learning and traits and why art should be utilized as an ‘end’ rather than ‘means’. Moreover, they talk about the importance of using creative arts to battle hate speech and shift mindsets. They also highlight the role that government plays in thrusting such mediums for counter speech and bringing a change in the lives of people.
