This journey of One India with Facebook has brought out perspectives on important themes of sustainable economic growth, digital literacy, and fake news menace which will reach and empower the communities. This episode highlights the contribution of SEEDS (Sustainable Environment and Ecological Development Society) to protect lives and livelihood of people exposed to disasters.
SEEDS (Sustainable Environment and Ecological Development Society) was founded in 1994 by Dr. Manu Gupta and Dr. Anshu Sharma with one goal, to protect and help people who are exposed to disasters. Over the years, the team of dedicated individuals have reached out to families affected by earthquakes, floods and cyclones and managed to restore schools and homes of many. SEEDS continue provide sustainable solution to communities before, during and after a disaster.
In one such case, the team of SEEDS piloted the Facebook Disaster Maps for the first time during the Kerala floods last year. The team of SEEDS used the maps provided by Facebook Geo Insights to track the movement and the locations of people affected by the floods. The philosophy of the organization has always been the one to work with communities, especially with the most affected and remote people with the help of technology.

So, where we are is the interface of these two things, trying to understand what is going wrong and trying to figure out how newer technologies everyday provide us better solutions to what we can do. On this episode, our expert panel discusses the success story of SEEDS and the initiatives taken by the organization to help people in need with the help of technology. The panel comprises of Vijayalakshmi Viswanathan (Director – Disaster Intel of SEEDS), Hemalatha CK (State Director for Floods – Kudumbashree), Kailash Gupta (Co- Founder – International Emergency Management Society, India) and Anurag Verma (Dy. Director – International Institute of Disaster Management). The panel was moderated by Shivani Gupta (Associate Editor – Republic TV).
They discuss how SEEDS worked intensively during the Kerala floods in the relief and rescue process. They further discuss how the women of Kudumbashree came forward to help during the floods and how they worked towards rehabilitation and reconstruction. While highlighting the role of social media at the time of disasters, panelists talk about how new age technology can be used to regain communication in the disaster struck areas.
