After Diwali's sparkling celebration, brothers and sisters throughout India get ready for the Bhai Dooj festival. On this occasion, the brothers are expected to shower their sisters with lavish gifts. The festival will be held this year on October 29, 2019. The Bhai Dooj festival is a festival similar to Raksha Bandhan. It celebrates the bond between brothers and sisters. The festival is observed on Diwali's fifth day, it's the day when sisters welcome their brothers, put tilak on their foreheads and perform aarti.

Bhai Dooj: Brother-Sister Rituals

In various Indian states, Bhai Dooj is known by different names, like Bhau Beej, Bhai Teeka and Bhai Phota. It is known as 'dooj' or 'Dwitiya' since it falls on the second day after the new moon day, hence the name 'Bhai Dooj.' It marks the end of Diwali's five-day festival. The Muhurat this year is from 1:10 p.m to 3.22 p.m

The rituals of Bhai Dooj are very simplistic, no big gestures or activities are involved in the rituals. The rituals signify a sister's well-wishes and prayers for her brother. The sister begins the ritual by applying tilak on the forehead of her brother. The sister also feeds him sweet dishes. In return, the brother gives the sister gifts. Kaddu (Pumpkin) flowers, betel leaves, betel nut and coins are also placed in the hand of the brother after the tilak, as per certain rituals.

Girls who do not have a brother, offer their prayers to the moon God on Bhai Dooj. Girls also apply Mehendi on their hands, as per traditions. As a token of love and affection, Bhai Bij gifts are also exchanged between brothers and sisters and are considered as part of the celebration. Some of the festival's popular dishes are Basundi Poori or Kheerni Poori and Shrikhand Poori.
