The history of cheese fondue

According to ancient legends, the origin of cheese fondue is traced back to the early 18th century when the families used to have cheese and bread during the extreme winters in Switzerland. Back then, the business of cheese and bread grew exponentially in the country during the summers, as families found it feasible to store the food for extreme winter weathers. While the cheese would age perfectly due to long storage, bread became stale and hard. However, the Swiss locals would heat the cheese with vines, garlic and several herbs and dip their stale bread into it. The bread would eventually soften when dipped into the hot flavourful cheese mixture. The word ‘fondue’ comes from the French word ‘fondre’, which means to melt. Since then, the term ‘fondue’ has been used to refer to many other types of fondue mixtures like chocolate, meat, and chicken fondue.
