Thalipeeth recipe: Easiest way to cook Maharashtrian thalipeeth

Thalipeeth is a famous dish in Maharashtra and also popular in Karnataka. Here are the ingredients and instructions on how to cook this hearty, nutritious dish.

A Maharashtrian snack, thalipeeth is a delicious dish. Made with a mixture of different grains combined, it is then spiked with onions and chillies and spread out with the hand to make fantastic little pancakes that keep you full for hours.

Thalipeeth is primarily prepared in the state of Karnataka, besides Maharashtra. It is very common in Marathi cuisine and is made with rice, wheat, jowar, and besan meal.

INGREDIENTS NEEDED: 

  • 1 cup jowar flour/sorghum flour
  • ¼ cup besan/gram flour
  • ¼ cup wheat flour/atta
  • ¼ cup bajra / pearl millet flour
  • ¼ cup rice flour
  • 1 tsp  ginger garlic paste
  • 2 green chilli, finely chopped
  • ¼ tsp turmeric / haldi
  • ½ tsp coriander powder
  • ½ tsp cumin powder/jeera powder
  • ¼ tsp ajwain/carom seeds
  • 2 tsp  sesame seeds / til
  • 2 tbsp coriander, finely chopped
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • ½ tsp salt
  • 1 cup water, to knead
  • oil for roasting

INSTRUCTIONS: 

  1. Take one cup of jowar flour, ¼ cup of besan, ¼ cup of wheat flour, ¼ cup of bajra and ¼ cup of rice flour in a large mixing bowl.

  2. Add 1 tablespoon of garlic paste, 2 tablespoons of green chilli, ¼ tablespoon of turmeric, ½ tablespoon of coriander powder, ½ tablespoon of cumin powder, 2 tablespoons of sesame seeds, 2 tablespoons of coriander, 1 carrot, and ½ tablespoon of salt.

  3. Mix well to ensure that all is well combined.

  4. Add 1⁄2-1 cup of water

  5. Take a small dough ball and put it on oiled butter sheet.

  6. Gently lower the sheet over the cold griddle upside down.

  7. Slowly peel off the sheet of butter paper without damaging the thalipeeth.

  8. Smear the thalipeeth with some oil.

  9. Cover and cook on a moderate flame, flipping to ensure that both sides are evenly cooked.

  10. Finally, add butter, pickle, and curd to accompany the thalipeeth.
