Many people end up hurting their ankles while playing sports, exercises or just by normal activities. However, meeting a doctor is very important as they have thorough and deep knowledge about it. But, sometimes due to weekends or other obstacles, there can be a delay in visiting a doctor. According to Dr. Melissa Conrad Stöppler from E-Medicine Health, there are ways a person can treat ankle sprains at home before visiting a doctor.
According to the portal, the pain and swelling that is eventually the result from a sprained ankle will last for a few days. Many times sprains heal in four to six weeks. Here are a few precautions and steps one must know when dealing with an ankle sprain.
Rest
Rest is essential when a person is having an ankle sprain because it will help in the reduction of further damage that may occur. Do not walk if it is not needed. While walking, try to put the body-weight on the other foot.

Ice or warm water
Apply ice immediately on the sprain as it will reduce the swelling. If ice is not available, take a bucket full of hot water and put the foot for a while to reduce the pain. If a person is using ice packs, it is advisable that they must apply ice for 20-30 minutes up to four times every day.

Compression
Use wrap-around elastic bandages or normal cloth bandages to stabilise the joint. It not only reduces the pain and swelling but also keeps the foot from getting worse. It is recommended that one must not completely rely on home treatments and should visit a doctor as soon as possible.
