Imphal: Manipur Governor Anusuiya Uikey said on Tuesday that necessary steps will be taken for the implementation of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) in the state. During an interaction with the delegation of the Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity (COCOMI) and United Naga Council (UNC), the Manipur Governor stated that the matter has been discussed with President Droupadi Murmu, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and Home Minister Amit Shah

"Governor assured the representatives that necessary steps will be taken to ensure the NRC be implemented in the state and it is just a matter of time. Governor said the matter has been discussed with the President of India, Finance Minister, and Union Home Minister and the Center is aware about the situation in the state," an official statement issued by Raj Bhawan said.

"She also assured the delegation that all necessary action will be taken up in the best interest of the people of Manipur," it added.

The delegation to meet the Manipur Governor was led by COCOMI coordinator Thokchom Somorendro and UNC president NG Lorho. They also submitted a memorandum to the governor, advocating for the expedited implementation of the NRC with 1951 as the base year in the state.

During the meeting, the delegation also urged the governor that NRC should be implemented at the earliest so that a "scientific method of identification" may be applied to detect illegal immigrants. They also urged the Governor to ensure that no further infiltration occurs in the state henceforth.

"Random village recognition without verification must be stopped. They further mentioned that the abnormal increase of villages in specific districts should be examined and corrective measures must be taken up," an official statement said.

Earlier in April this year, Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh said that the people of the state would be happy over the Centre's intent to implement the National Register of Citizens (NRC) as people of the state have been demanding "constitutional protection".

“Illegal migrants should be removed through NRC. PM Modi and the Home Minister are doing and have done a lot. The fencing has started. The FMR has been scrapped. The screening of illegal Myanmar migrants has started through biometrics and eye scanning. The only thing left is NRC. The people of Manipur would be happy with the decision of NRC,” CM Biren Singh said.
