P V Sindhu on Sunday became the first Indian to win badminton World Championships (BWF) gold by beating Nozomi Okuhara of Japan in the finals. Sindhu won 21-7 21-7 in the summit clash that lasted just 38 minutes. As she thanked the crowd for the incredible support she received and her coaches, Sindhi dedicated the award to her mother. Speaking at the event she said that she did it for the country and dedicated it to her mother who is celebrating her birthday on August 25. It was Sindhu's fifth World Championships medal -- joint-most for a woman singles player with former Olympics and world champion Zhang Ning of China -- to go with the two successive silvers and a couple of bronze medals.

Dedicating the victory to her mother, Sindhu said: "I want to dedicate it to my mother, it's her birthday today. Happy Birthday mom." As Sindhu wished her mom happy birthday, the crowd started singing the birthday song. She continued: "Last time I lost in the finals and before year also I lost the finals, I am very happy this time, it was a very important win for me. I would like to thank the crowd because it means a lot. Every time they were they for my match. They cheered me. Big thanks to all of you. I won for my country. I am very proud of it being an Indian." PV Sindhu also thanked her coach and Pullela Gopichand for all the support they have given to her.
