7 years ago, 15 Indians and a South African did it for a Billion! Here's remembering the 2011 World Cup triumph

There are probably a million other reasons why the events of April 2, 2011, were unforgettable. And if you ask the players who were on the field at the Wankhede Stadium that day, they'll give you a million more!

On this day, seven years ago, India reached the pinnacle of ODI cricket.

The event was significant for a number of reasons, some of the most relevant ones being:

  • It enabled a nation of a billion to finally scratch that decades-long itch. 1983 was no longer that distant ideal that India could just not replicate
  • Inching towards the end of what had been a stellar then-22-year-long career, Sachin Tendulkar was able to lift the World Cup. As Virat Kohli said right after the match after the team carried Sachin on a lap-of-honour, "He's carried us for years. It's nice to be able to carry him now".
  • It ended three World Cups-worth of Australian dominance with India doing the honours.
  • India defeated Pakistan in a high-stakes geopolitically significant knock-out encounter in Mohali.
  • MS Dhoni cemented his place as the world's best finisher as his ice-cool hammerblow delivered a coup de grâce to a spirited Sri Lankan side and sent a billion+ people into raptures!

There are probably a million other reasons why the events of April 2, 2011, were unforgettable. And if you ask the players who were on the field at the Wankhede Stadium that day, they'll give you a million more!

Suresh Raina was likely padded up in the pavilion to bat had either Dhoni or Yuvraj fallen. He probably remembers it like it were yesterday. Here's his tribute:

"7 years ago, 15 Indians and a South African did it for a Billion people. #WorldCup2011"
