Australia secured a comprehensive victory over hosts England in the first match of the Ashes, as they beat the hosts by 251 runs, with spinner Nathan Lyon grabbing six scalps and pacer Pat Cummins taking four scalps to seal the victory for the visitors.

Spin-Pace duo win it for Australia

Nathan Lyon's six scalps included many crucial wickets such as England skipper Joe Root, Jason Roy, and vice-skipper Ben Stokes. Lyon finished his spell with figures of 6-49 in 20 overs in the second innings. Speedster Pat Cummins provided assist to the spinner, grabbing four wickets to his name and conceding 32 runs in 11 overs.

Lyon's latest performance saw him go past the 350-wicket mark for Australia. Lyon also narrowly missed out on a hat-trick after dismissing Moeen Ali and Stuart Broad in consecutive deliveries.

England struggled with the bat

Chasing 398 runs, England's chase never got off to a bright start as wickets started to fall from the very beginning. The Australian spin-pace combo left the English batsman lurching in the crease, finding it very difficult to put the ball away and keep the scoreboard ticking. In addition to this, England's miseries were coupled due to poor umpiring from Joe Wilson, which saw Joe Root being given out twice only to use the DRS to overturn his decision. Tailender Chris Woakes top-scored for the hosts in the second innings with 37 runs, while Jason Roy and Joe Root scored 28 runs each. The rest of the England batting line-up were dismissed for very cheaply, mostly in single digits.

Low standard of umpiring

Umpire Joel Wilson, who was recently promoted to the Elite panel of umpires, has had a miserable run so far in the Ashes opener as nine of his decisions has been overturned until now. The Caribbean official's string of bad decisions continued from the first innings on to the second, leaving Wilson red-faced. Aleem Dar and Joel Wilson bore the brunt of fans after giving a series of wrong decisions from the first innings. A mammoth total of 14 wrong decisions have been overturned in this match, indicating the quality of umpiring in the game.
