Most of the top-order collapsed under the merciless bowling from the hosts, with Stuart Broad leading the way, grabbing a fifer along the way with Chris Woakes, who took three scalps. However, the hosts saw a distraught James Anderson walk off the pitch after his calf-injury returned to force him to retire in between the game. 

However, the highlight for the day was Steve Smith's knock that saved the day for Australia. Former skipper Mark Waugh took to laud Smith's determined knock of 144 runs off 214 balls that saw Australia reach a decent total of 284 runs.
