Ireland's let their dream start to go down the drain as they were bowled out for 38 in the second innings chasing a total of 182 on the third day of the one-off test match at Lord's Cricket Ground on Friday.

The historic Test match saw 20 wickets falling on 1st day. The freshly crowned World Cup winners England were all out for 85 in their first innings on day one before lunch. Ireland followed suit and were all out for 207.

When asked about the dismal performance, English skipper Joe Root blamed the pitch and called it 'sub-standard'. He called it an unfair contest between the bat and the ball. Read his statement below:

Many fans and cricket gurus thought that Root was falling back on excuses and the players are supposed to adapt to situations. Former Aussie pacer Jason Gillespie took to Twitter to voice his opinions and said that Test batting is about adapting to the conditions and situations. Gillespie's rebuke to England's excuse seemed like a preview to the banter that is going to be witnessed in the upcoming Ashes.

Even the most informed voice in cricket, Harsha Bhogle agreed to the former Aussie.

Excuse or not, in the second innings England scored 303 to give the Irishmen a target of 182 which they fell way short of.

England is yet to announce their squad for Ashes that commences on August 1. The Ashes between arch-rivals England and Australi will also mark the beginning of the prestigious ICC Test Championship.
