Amidst a closely contested third Test between Australia and India in Melbourne, there was a moment of controversy and shame off the field as a few Indian fans at the stadium accused a section of supporters of using racial taunts against them and the players.
It is reported that there were chants of 'show us your visa' on the first two days, and despite Cricket Australia issuing warning, the chants continued, forcing the authorities to evict a few of the fans.
Speaking on this matter, a CA spokesperson was quoted by ESPNcricinfo as saying, "Cricket Australia takes a zero tolerance stance against any form of abuse or racial vilification at any of our matches, whether it be towards fans, players, or staff. Fans are able to report this to stadium staff or security. Victoria Police and MCG stadium security monitored the behaviour of the crowd in a section of the stadium today and evicted several fans for inappropriate behaviour. They will continue to monitor the area for remaining days of the Test."
There was also an unfortunate incident when a section of fans chanted 'Wanker', aiming towards Indian skipper Virat Kohli. Though, the 30-year-old, instead of reacting, played down the chants by removing his cap and bowing in front of the crowd.
While the sledging was pretty evident off the field, much of it was also going on the field, especially between the wicketkeepers of the two teams. Australian skipper Tim Paine and India's Rishabh Pant both had a go at each other during the course of the ongoing Test.
Paine mocked Pant using the reference of MS Dhoni's inclusion in the upcoming ODIs. "Tell you what big MS is back in the one day squad. Should get this bloke down to Hurricanes. They need a batter. Fancy that extend your Aussie holiday, beautiful town Hobart too... get him a water front apartment," he said before adding, "Have him over for dinner. Do you babysit? I can take my wife to the movies while you watch the kids."
But Pant wasn't one to back down, and when Paine came out to bat on Day Four, he roasted the Australian skipper with some hilarious remarks.
"We've got a special guest today, come on boys. Special appearance today boy, come on. No responsibility there from captain. Running away, always running away. Too difficult, too difficult," he said before adding, "Have you heard of the word, a 'temporary captain', ever? I am seeing it. You don't need anything to get him out. He loves to talk, that's the only thing he can do. Only talking, talking."
