Bangladesh cricket strike: Players Association President set to quit

CWAB president Naimur Rahman said that he is ready to resign from his role; Rahman said that he is alright to see his successor replace him at the earliest

On the backdrop of the Bangladesh cricketers' 11-point demand presented to the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB), the Cricketers Welfare Association of Bangladesh (CWAB) president Naimur Rahman has revealed on Tuesday that he is ready to quit from his position. While reading the demands in front of the media, former cricketer Naeem Islam listed out the first demand which stated that the players want the immediate resignation of the current CWAB president. Ever since the CWAB’s inception, the former Bangladesh captain Naimur Rahman Durjoy has been heading the committee. Incidentally, Rahman was also the first-ever Test captain of the Bangladesh cricket team. The country's upcoming Test series against India, which is under threat, is named after him alongside the current BCCI President-elect Sourav Ganguly in the form of the Ganguly-Dujoy Trophy.

CWAB president Naimur Rahman ready to resign

According to Bangladeshi media reports, Rahman said that he is alright to see his successor replace him at the earliest. When asked about the demand of equal pay for local and overseas players alike, the former cricketer said that he will justify everything the association has done before meeting their demands. He acknowledged that the demands made are logical and have been already proposed to the BCB.

Meanwhile, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) assembled an emergency meeting on Tuesday to address the players' impending requirements. The Bangladesh cricket team has decided to not participate in any cricketing activity until their demands were fully met by the governing body. Their strike will directly impact the ongoing National Cricket League, the country’s oldest and premier first-class tournament. It will also affect Bangladesh’s upcoming tour to India which will comprise of three T20Is and two Test matches.

Bangladesh tour of India 2019

Initially, the Bangladeshi cricket team were slated to tour India which would begin with a T20I affair on November 3. The tour is supposed to be country’s second-ever bilateral trip to India where the two Asian giants were scheduled to participate in the second edition of the Ganguly–Durjoy Trophy. The eponymous Test trophy started when the Bangladesh team previously visited India in 2017. In the inaugural 2017 edition, Team India won the one-off Test match by 208 runs. ‘Man of the Match’ Virat Kohli scored a flamboyant 204 in the first innings to propel India’s total to 687-6 declared.
