April 2, 2011 will forever remain etched in the memories of all the die-hard Cricket fans in India. It was on this day that India won its second World Cup after a long wait of 28 years  by beating Sri Lanka in the summit clash by six wickets at the Wankhede Stadium. After Kapil's Devils had lifted the World Cup back in 1983 , the fans had to wait for over a generation to watch their team lift the coveted trophy once again.Nonetheless, Sourav Ganguly had led the Indian team to the World Cup final in 2003 but they were completely outplayed by Ricky Ponting's Australia. By the virtue of this win, India also became the first nation to win the World Cup on home soil and Sachin Tendulkar also fulfilled his childhood dream

However, in the final it was Gautam Gambhir who was the chief architect of India's win. He came to bat in the very first over after Virender Sehwag's dismissal. He played a lot of risky shots as the viewers had their hearts in their mouths but the risks paid off. Post Sachin's dismissal, he put on 83 runs for the third wicket with Virat Kohli and anchored the run chase. Gambhir scored a valiant 97 of 122 balls. He was castled by Thisara Perera and fell short of a well deserved ton.

On the occasion of this triumph's eighth anniversary Gambhir took to Twitter to share the picture of his jersey which had the mud stains during that memorable knock along with his World Cup medal.

Netizens also appreciated Gambhir for his valiant knock.
