Former South African Test cricketer Dale Steyn was recently roped in by Melbourne Stars for the upcoming season of Big Bash. The ninth edition of Australia’s premier domestic T20 competition will begin from December 17, 2019 and conclude on February 8, 2020. Dale Steyn, however, is not the only South African player who will be representing a team in the upcoming Big Bash League. He will be joined by former Proteas batsman AB de Villiers, who will turn up for Brisbane Heat this season. His teammate Chris Morris will also be playing for Sydney Thunder.

In his debut Big Bash season, the paceman will be playing six matches for his new team. Steyn, however, is not new to the shortest format of the game. The 36-year old, who recently announced his retirement from Test cricket, continues to play white-ball cricket for South Africa. He has represented the Proteas in 44 T20I matches. In his international T20 career, the South African pacer picked up 61 wickets at a healthy economy rate of 6.79. He has also played domestic T20 cricket for various leagues across the world. Barring injuries, the Steyn Gun has been a regular member of his national side since he made his debut in 2004.

Widely considered as one of the greatest fast bowlers of all time, Steyn ended his Test career with 439 wickets in just 93 matches. He was a crucial member of the touring South African team which won the Test series in Australia in 2008-09. In his 125 ODI appearance for his national side, the right-arm pacer picked up 196 ODI wickets.

How can Dale Steyn’s presence influence the Stars?

Going into the 2019-20 Big Bash League season, Dale Steyn will be looking to make full use of this opportunity with his vast international experience. The Stars will be heavily banking on the pacer’s experience if the Melbourne-based T20 side wants to make an impact on the upcoming season.
