BCCI sources tell Republic TV that Virat Kohli and Ravi Shastri would not require the guidance of Rahul Dravid and Zaheer Khan in the near future. The cricketing legends who were earlier expected to undertake the role of bowling coach and batting consultant for overseas Test tours, respectively, have been sidelined at the mercy of the skipper and the coach. The source adds that Zaheer and Dravid feel humiliated and will not be available on short notice. Furthermore, the legends have decided to not approach the BCCI themselves.
The skipper and the new head coach addressed their First Joint Press Conference on Wednesday in Mumbai before the team departs for Sri Lanka.
Ravi Shastri, in his first address to the media after being appointed the head coach of the Indian cricket team, made an emphatic statement in a press conference on Tuesday. "I was clear in my head about my core team", he said, putting to rest the speculations surrounding his appointment.
Sanjay Bangar has been appointed the 'assistant coach', R. Sreedhar is the 'fielding coach' and Bharat Arun is the 'bowling coach'. Commenting on the role Rahul Dravid and Zaheer Khan, Shastri said, "spoke to both individuals personally. They are fantastic cricketers, and their inputs will be invaluable."
The four-member committee comprising acting president CK Khanna, acting secretary Amitabh Choudhary, BCCI CEO Rahul Johri and Committee of Administrators (CoA) member Diana Edulji met on Tuesday at the board headquarters in Mumbai. Sanjay Bangar and R Sridhar will remain as the batting and fielding coach.
On Wednesday, Ravi Shastri and Virat Kohli held their first joint news conference on the eve of India's tour to Sri Lanka during which many related matters were discussed.
