The southpaw was last seen in action on June 9 during India's ICC Cricket World Cup 2019 league match against Australia. However, he could not take any further part in the tournament after he was ruled out due to an injury between his thumb and the index finger.

He had sustained this injury after a rising delivery from Pat Cummins had struck him on his thumb. However, he overcame all the odds and continued batting in pain. His efforts bore fruits as he ended up scoring a match-winning century (117 of 109 deliveries).
