Indian cricket team, who lead the ongoing Freedom Trophy series 1-0, ended Day 1 of the second Test on 273-3 after bad light stopped play at 85.1 overs. The ongoing three-match Test series between two nations also forms a part of the inaugural ICC World Test Championship. The Virat Kohli-led side currently leads the Championship points table while the visitors are yet to make a mark in the standings. Last month, the Proteas started their Indian tour with a 3-match T20I series which ended in a 1-1 draw.

At 273-3, overnight batsmen Virat Kohli (63*) and Ajinkya Rahane (18*) resumed the Indian innings on Day 2. Captain and vice-captain batted through the entire first session without losing their wickets. The two batsmen formed an unbeaten 178-run partnership as Rahane lost his wicket immediately after Lunch. Rahane, who registered his 20th Test half-century, edged one to keeper de Kock off Keshav Maharaj after scoring 58.

Captain Kohli was then joined by Indian all-rounder Jadeja to the crease. At 376-4, the two batsmen joined forces to see the Indian score go past the 600-mark against the tiring South Africans. Kohli brought up his 26th Test century and later, converted it into a double as the two batsmen were scoring at 10 runs per over at one stage. Kohli’s double-hundred was the seventh of his career, eclipsing Sachin and Sehwag’s previous record to register most Test double-centuries by an Indian.

Jadeja also scored a whirlwind 91 off 104 balls before his dismissal brought down curtains to the Indian innings. Kohli finally declared at 601-5 as the Indian skipper registered his highest Test score with an unbeaten 254. South Africa then faced the remaining 9 overs in the Day, however, their innings was rocked early by paceman Umesh Yadav. The Proteas ended the day at 36-3, trailing the hosts by 565 runs.
