India vs Bangladesh: 5 major talking points from the first T20I

Bangladesh registered a historic win over India riding on the back off Mushfiqur Rahim's impressive half-century in New Delhi on Sunday. This was their first win over India in nine T20Is.

Bangladesh skipper Mahmudullah Riyad won the toss and decided to bowl first. India's batting never really found the momentum as wickets kept tumbling on this two-paced pitch but India managed to score a respectable 148. Bangladesh chased it down convincingly with Rahim starring for them with the bat, scoring 60 of 43 deliveries as Bangladesh chased it down with three balls to spare.

1. Indian batsmen's inability to adapt:

Indian batsmen struggled for timing and could not adapt to the two-paced pitch and threw their wickets away. Rohit Sharma was dismissed early for 9. KL Rahul looked good but was the first batsman to be done in by the slowness of the pitch for 15. Shreyas Iyer decided to play his shots and his cameo lasted for a while. Rishabh Pant struggled to get going as he scored 27 while Shikhar Dhawan top-scored with 41 off 42 deliveries.

2. Vulnerability against spin:

Indian batters could not apply themselves against the spinners. The two young Bangladesh spinners, Aminul Islam and Afif Hosain were excellent. They bowled 6 overs between them giving away only 33 runs and picking up 3 key wickets which contributed hugely to the result.

3. India's DRS woes:

In the 10th over by Yuzvendra Chahal, India went wrong with their DRS call thrice. Chahal stuck Rahim on the pads in two consecutive deliveries. Rohit discussed with Pant and Chahal after the first and decided not to take the DRS. There was not even a discussion for the second. However, replays would show that both balls pitched in line and that both would have gone on to hit the stumps. On the last ball, Pant felt there was an inside edge off the bat as he collected the last ball of the over. India took the review only to find there was no inside edge.

4. Below-par fielding:

India's fielding was below-average as Krunal Pandya dropped an absolute sitter which could have brought an end to Rahim's innings. The Bangladesh wicket-keeper then went on the pile quick runs scoring 60 off 43 balls and took the match away from India which set up Bangladesh win.

5. Death Bowling:

The death bowling of the hosts was left exposed. Bangladesh needed 22 of the final two overs as Khaleel Ahmed bowled the 19th over in which Rahim scored four consecutive boundaries which ensured that they only needed 4 in the last over to get over the line. Khaleel ended with the figures of 4/37 at an economy rate of 9.2.

India will now play Bangladesh in the 2nd T20I in Rajkot on Thursday.
