Indian skipper Virat Kohli may well be set to miss the highly-anticipated debut Test of Aghanistan against India later this year. The one-off fixture marks the entry of Afghanistan into Test format, and will be played a few days before India head out for their lengthy tour of Ireland and England.
It is reported that Kohli may well sit out of this fixture so that he can spend time with County team, Surrey, and prepare for the five-Test series against England. Moreover, vice captain Ajinkya Rahane is also set to fly to England early to play India A. In absence of these two players, it appears that the cricket team will be led by a new face.
Should Rahane also not feature in the one-off Test, India will have to look for a new captain within their ranks. The No.1 Test team has many options to choose from. Let’s take a look at the top contenders.
Kannanur Lokesh Rahul
Reports claim that Shikhar Dhawan and Murali Vijay are set to fly to England for the preparation of the England test match, leaving KL Rahul as the sole opener in the team. The dynamic opener has made his mark in a relatively short career so far. However, he has not had experience leading a team at the high level, we are not sure whether he will be given the responsibility.
Parthiv is a strong contender as he is also amongst the most experienced players in the Test team. He has a healthy experience of leading Gujarat in domestic cricket as well. Chances are, the wicket-keeper might just captain the team in the match against Afghanistan.
Ravindra Jadeja is a Test regular and has an experience of playing 35 Tests, 136 ODIs and 87 first-class games in total. There are chances that he might be appointed as the captain to lead India towards victory.
If Ajinkya Rahane sits out of the historic game, Hardik Pandya could very well be in the minds of Indian selectors as the new captain. He has showcased promising performances in the past.
