Four-time Indian Premier League champions Mumbai Indians have traded leg-spinner Mayank Markande with Delhi Capitals for West Indies all-rounder Sherfane Rutherford. Mumbai Indians have released Markande to Delhi Capitals and in return roped in the Guyanese.

Who is Mayank Markande?

He started off as a medium-pacer, but his coach on spotting his small frame and a good slower one from the back of his hand convinced him to switch to leg-spin in his teens. He made his List A and T20 debuts in the 2018 domestic season for Punjab as a 20-year-old and played a handful of matches. In what is a testimony to Mumbai Indians' scouting team, Markande was picked up from nowhere in the 2018 auction for 20 lakhs after he impressed the think tank in the pre-auction trials. He won over the captain's confidence as well in the nets and was thrown into the deep sea straightaway as Mumbai chose to field him in their starting eleven over bigger names.

"We wish Mayank the very best for his future. Mayank is a brilliant talent and we were fortunate to have spotted and nurtured him early. It is a difficult decision for us, but we are releasing Mayank for better cricketing prospects and know that Mayank is on the cusp of emerging as yet another shining star of Indian cricket. He will always be a part of the Mumbai Indians family," MI owner Akash Ambani said in a statement.

Who is Sherfane Rutherford?

The hard-hitting 20-year-old southpaw, Sherfane Rutherford went into Global T-20 League as an unknown commodity but he came out of that tournament with the reputation of being a ferocious hitter. He was the leading run-scorer for the Windies B team, with 230 runs in eight matches, including a swashbuckling hundred.

The stellar performance in the Global T-20 League earned him a CPL contract too. On his CPL debut against Patriots, he didn't get the opportunity to bat. But with the amount of potential he posses, it shouldn't take Rutherford long to make his mark in the CPL. He is certainly a future prospect for Windies too.

"I am excited to welcome the talented Sherfane into our family. Sherfane has impressed us with his all-round skills and match-winning attitude. His exploits across the world at such an early stage of his career has been impressive and we believe he will find his home at Mumbai Indians", said owner Akash Ambani.
