New Zealand's opening batsman Martin Guptill on Thursday entered the 6000 run club in ODI cricket following his brilliant 138 against Sri Lanka in the first ODI at Mount Maunganui, and in doing so, reached the landmark faster than the Indian duo of MS Dhoni and Rohit Sharma in terms of the number of innings. The 32-year-old joined the 6k club in his 157th innings, which puts him eight in the list.

South Africa's Hashim Amla is the fastest to 6000 runs, having achieved it in just 123 innings. He is followed by Indian skipper Virat Kohli, who reached the landmark in his 136th innings. Rohit Sharma had entered the 6k club in his 162nd innings, while Dhoni did it in his 166th innings.

Guptill's 138 not only helped him to personal glory, but also propelled his team to a massive score against Sri Lanka in the first ODI. He laid the platform, and it was followed by a quickfire half-century by Ross Taylor and a 13-ball 47 by James Neesham, which helpe the hosts post a gigantic 371 for 7 in their 50 overs.
