Michael Vaughan wants life bans to tackle match-fixing scandals

In the wake of many cricketers being picked up for match-fixing scandals and corrupt approaches from bookies, former England skipper Michael Vaughan has called for life bans as punishment in order to tackle the menace. Six cricketers were arrested in relation to a match-fixing scandal in the Karnataka Premier League including popular domestic star CM Gautam. Michael Vaughan, who had earlier voiced for a life ban to be handed out to banned Bangladesh all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan, said that life bans would surely be the best solution to the problems and that corruption will continue to thrive until dealt with strongly.

Michael Vaughan lashes out at 2-year-ban

Former English cricketer Micheal Vaughan took to Twitter and lashed out at Bangladeshi Cricketer Shakib Al Hasan asserting that no sympathy should be shown towards him. The International Cricket Council (ICC) has announced that Bangladesh all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan has been suspended from all cricket for two years after he accepted three charges under the ICC Anti-Corruption Code. Michael Vaughan, who has always been vocal about his view pertaining to the sport, in his Tweet stated that this should have been reported straight away and the tenure for the suspension should have been more.

CM Gautam, Abrar Qazi arrested

The arrest comes close on the heels of the detention of Bengaluru team player Nishant Singh Shekhawat earlier this week. Three others including the owner of the Belagavi team, have been arrested in the past couple of months since the scandal came to light. Gautam and Qazi have played in domestic cricket and the Indian Premier League also. While Gautam, a seasoned Karnataka cricketer, who shifted to Goa this season, Kazi now plays for Mizoram. Apart from featuring in the Ranji Trophy for Karnataka and Goa, CM Gautam has played in the IPL for RCB, Mumbai Indians and Delhi Daredevils, the officer added. Qazi had played Ranji for Karnataka and now for Mizoram, the investigation officer added. Both CM Gautham and Kazi had been named in their respective state squads for the upcoming Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy tournament, scheduled to begin on Friday. On October 26, Bengaluru Blasters bowling coach Vinu Prasad and batsman Vishwanathan were arrested in connection with the fixing scandal. The coach allegedly manipulated a game between Bengaluru Blasters and Belagavi Panthers last year. The KPL fixing came to limelight with the arrest of Ali Ashfaq Thara, who owned the Belagavi team.
