Mohammad Naveed: UAE bowler accepts failure to report fixing approach

UAE bowler Mohammad Naveed accepts failure in reporting a fixing attempt made to him. Naveed, along with two other players, are currently facing charges.

Emirati cricketer Mohammad Naveed is currently facing ICC corruption charges for not reporting an approach made to him by a “fixer”. The right-arm medium pacer admitted that he made a mistake for not reporting the same to the cricket governing body. Three players have been caught up in the ongoing investigation. Other players include Qadeer Ahmed and UAE’s top-order batsman Shaiman Anwar.

Mohammad Naveed accepts failure to report ‘fixing’

Mohammad Naveed was reportedly approached by a person who claimed to be T10 franchise representative. Upon realising that the person was a fixer, Naveed immediately decided to end the conversation. According to ICC, however, the UAE bowler is currently facing charges for his failure to report. Naveed, along with Shaiman Anwar, are being booked as they allegedly stood to gain approximately US $272,000 had they been successful in their attempts.

According to a statement released by an ICC official, both players are charged with "contriving, or being party to an agreement or effort to fix or contrive or otherwise influence improperly, the result, progress, conduct or any other aspect of matches in the upcoming ICC World T20 Qualifiers 2019.

Mohammad Naveed in his defence

While speaking with a leading daily, Naveed defended himself by pointing out his national record. The cricketer has represented UAE in 39 ODI’s and 31 T20’s, picking up a combined 90 international wickets. He went onto express his sincerity towards the game and his career and he also felt guilty for not talking to the board and to the ICC on time.

UAE are set to host the 2019 ICC T20 World Cup Qualifier, a tournament conducted to determine which associate teams will be included in the ICC World T20 in Australia next year. A total of 14 nations will be participating in this 14-day event which was previously conducted in 2015.
