"Now janta sawal poochegi...": Mohammad Kaif pulls 'netaji' Gautam Gambhir's leg, shares anecdote from Under-15 1996 World Cup

Cricketer-turned-politician Gautam Gambhir won the 2019 Lok Sabha elections in his political debut from East Delhi constituency in the national capital on May 23. Days after his win, former India middle-order batsman Mohammad Kaif took to Twitter to extend best wishes to his Gambhir.

Cricketer-turned-politician Gautam Gambhir won the 2019 Lok Sabha elections in his political debut from East Delhi constituency in the national capital on May 23. Days after his win, former India middle-order batsman Mohammad Kaif took to Twitter to extend best wishes to Gambhir on his win. 

In the tweet on Saturday, Kaif wrote that during the Under 15 World Cup in 1996, Gambhir loved asking questions, adding that now the nation will ask the questions (janta sawal poochegi).

Gautam Gambhir won East Delhi on a BJP ticket weeks after joining the saffron party. He has defeated Congress candidate Arvinder Singh Lovely by 3,91,222 votes and AAP's Atishi Marlena. 

Taking to Twitter after his victory, Gambhir wrote: "Neither it's a 'Lovely' cover drive and nor it is an 'Atishi' ballebaazi. It's just the BJP's 'gambhir' ideology which people have supported. Thanks a lot to all the BJP team-mates for getting this mandate. We won't fail people's choice."

Interestingly, Former Indian cricketer Mohammad Kaif contested the 2014 Lok Sabha elections on a Congress seat from UP's historic Phulpur constituency. However, he finished fourth after the BJP, Samajwadi Party and Bahujan Samaj Party. He was outclassed by BJP candidate Keshav Prasad Maurya. Kaif announced his retirement from all forms of cricket earlier in 2018.

Gambhir announced his retirement from all forms of cricket on 3 December 2018, ahead of his final match for the Delhi cricket team against the Andhra cricket team in the Ranji Trophy on 6 December 2018.
