Prithvi Shaw set to return in action during Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy

Suspended for drug violation Mumbai opener Prithvi Shaw is likely to join his squad on November 16, 2019. His suspension ends on November 15. According to news agencies, Shaw is expected to play in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy – the domestic T20 tournament. BCCI gave Shaw an eight-month back-dated suspension for consuming a cough syrup that had terbutaline, a prohibited substance. Shaw has claimed that he has inadvertently consumed the cough syrup during the Mushtaq Ali Trophy in February-March, 2019. BCCI, in its verdict, had said that Shaw would have to serve at least half of the ban period. The period expires on November 15.

Meanwhile, Prithvi Shaw, who made the headlines with a century on his debut Test in October last year, has been training at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru the past months. While accepting the ban, Shaw had promised to return stronger because he loved the game and wanted to play for India and Mumbai. It seems his team Mumbai is eager to have him back.

The Chairman of State's ad-hoc selection committee Milind Rege said that Prithvi Shaw would undoubtedly be considered during the selection process. By the time Shaw becomes eligible to participate, Mumbai will have played six of their seven group stage games. However, on the bright side, Mumbai has only announced squad for the first three matches as some of its key players are currently on India duty for the T20I against Bangladesh.

Rege told a sports website that since Prithvi Shaw will be eligible to play from November 16, he could make the team. He, however, refused to guarantee Shaw's return. Rege said that Shaw was focusing on training, which was the right thing to do at the moment. Rege said that Shaw had proved his mettle as a match-winner during the short time he played for Mumbai and India. He said these attributes would weigh in Shaw's favour during the selection. But Rege emphasised that Shaw's accomplishments would not earn him a free pass. He will still have to compete for a spot on the team, the selector said.
