The first Test match demonstrated how lethal the pair can be on home soil. Ashwin got India a brilliant start for India and picked up seven wickets in the first South African innings. His scalps included Proteas captain Faf du Plessis and Quinton de Kock. Jadeja, on the other hand, came to his own in the second innings where he picked four wickets. He sent back the in-form Dean Elgar at only two which was probably very influential in making the match results turn in India's favour. Ashwin ended the match with eight wickets and Jadeja got four wickets.
The Ashwin-Jadeja spin could arguably be compared to the spin-pair of Anil Kumble and Harbhajan Singh. Kumble and Bhajji played 34 matches but managed to win only 14 of them. They shared 356 wickets among them at an average of 27.23 and struck at a rate of 62.63. Jadeja and Ashwin, on the other hand, have won 22 out of the 29 matches that they have played together. In this time, they have picked up 329 wickets with an average of 21.29 and a strike rate of 51.91. The duo has also shared the dressing room at the Chennai Super Kings squad. Jadeja is currently ranked at 11 on the ICC Test Bowlers Rankings. Ashwin is at ranked at 14.
