In just over a year, Shubman Gill has made massive strides in his career, so much so that now he has been included in Indian squad. Having made his First Class debut only in 2017, the Punjab-born opener represented India in the U-19 World Cup in 2018, and now sees himself sharing the dressing room with the likes of Virat Kohli and MS Dhoni.
He was drafted into India's squad for the ongoing ODI series against Australia and the upcoming series against New Zealand. And India's chief selector MSK Prasad has revealed that Gill's U-19, India A head coach and former Indian batsman Rahul Dravid had a say in it.
"We have discussed with Rahul (Dravid), that Shubman is ready for international cricket. The best part is the clutch of A tours which has made all these players battle ready for the biggest challenge," MSK Prasad said on the selection of the youngster for the crucial ODI series'.
His rise in Indian cricket, which comes along with huge promise, has seen him having an outside chance to be part of the Indian team for the upcoming World Cup. Given his ability to bat at the top, as well as in the middle-order, Prasad feels the impossible could be true for Gill.
"Shubman is comfortable both opening the innings as well as playing in the middle-order. For New Zealand series, we are looking at him as the reserve opener behind Shikhar (Dhawan) and Rohit (Sharma). I won't comment if he will make it to World Cup but he was phenomenal as an opener for India A in New Zealand," he added.
On Sunday, Gill along with Tamil Nadu all-rounder Vijay Shankar were chosen as replacements for KL Rahul and Hardik Pandya for the Australia and New Zealand series, owing to the suspension till further action for the latter duo.
Initially, the selectors had picked Mayank Agarwal for K L Rahul and Vijay Shankar for Pandya but it has been learnt that Agarwal is nursing a niggle", a source close to the selection committee told PTI.
"That is why the team management has asked for only one replacement in Australia and that is Shankar. And Shubman Gill is being rewarded for his good show in Ranji Trophy and A-tours," a source told.
