Rohit Sharma and Adam Gilchrist Test debuts

Another commonality between them is their Test debuts. Incredibly, they made their debuts on the same date. Sharma debuted on November 7, 2013 whereas Gilchrist debuted on November 7, 1999. Both the batsmen also had a similar kind of debut as they shined with the bat.

Rohit Sharma made his debut against West Indies at Eden Gardens in Kolkata. Incidentally, the match was also a part of Sachin Tendulkar's farewell series. Having won the toss, the Windies elected to bat first and managed to post 234 on the board. India did not begin well as they kept losing wickets regularly and were left reeling for 156/6. Sharma & Ashwin started building the innings and overtook the Windies total. Both showed maturity and character to bail India out of the situation.  Sharma scored a fine century & Ashwin soon followed. Sharma was dismissed for 177 but showed good temperament in his first very Test itself as India posted a commanding first-innings total of 453. Windies were bowled out for 168, which gave India a win by an innings and 51 runs. Rohit Sharma was adjudged 'Player of the Match'.

On the other hand, Adam Gilchrist made his Test match debut in the first Test against Pakistan at The Gabba in Brisbane in November 1999, becoming the 381st Australian Test cricketer. The southpaw replaced Ian Healy, who was dropped after his poor run, despite his request to the national selectors to allow him a farewell game in front of his home crowd. Gilchrist's debut in Tests coincided with a dramatic rise in Australia's fortunes. Gilchrist's icy reception at the Gabba did not faze him as he took five catches, stumped Azhar Mahmood off Shane Warne's bowling and scored a rapid 81 that helped the  Aussies to secure a comfortable ten wicket-win.
