Rohit Sharma has been an outstanding batsman in the limited-overs format. Rohit is the only batsman to have scored three double centuries in One Day Internationals and also has a record highest score in 50-overs cricket which is yet to be broken. The Hitman is also a successful T20I batsman as well. In fact, he is the only batsman to have scored four centuries in the shortest format of the game.
However, Rohit is yet to set a benchmark for himself in Test match cricket. Sharma had made his Test debut in back in 2013 against West Indies during Sachin Tendulkar's farewell series. He had scored a century on debut (177). Rohit Sharma also has the second-best score by an Indian on Test debut after Shikhar Dhawan (187).
Unlike limited-overs format, Rohit Sharma has not been able to replicate his excellent run in the game's longest format as he has only managed three tons and 10 half-centuries in a mere 27 appearances. Nonetheless, Sourav Ganguly believes that Rohit can be successful in Tests.
Showing faith in Rohit Sharma's batting abilities, Sourav Ganguly has said that Rohit should settle in the opener's slot while Ajinkya Rahane should bat in the middle-order as he gives a lot of stability to the team in that position. Ganguly had written this in the column of a daily newspaper.
At the same time, the former skipper was also puzzled regarding who among the two Mumbai batsmen will be selected for the first Test on Thursday.
Ganguly also added that Rohit was in blistering form during the World Cup but was on and off in the away Tests against South Africa and Australia last year while Rahane was not his usual self in Australia.
As India start their ICC World Test Championship campaign against the Windies at Antigua, this might be the perfect opportunity for Rohit Sharma to give a new lease of life to his Test career. In case if he is selected and if he manages to make an impression, then he also has the chance to be a favourable candidate for the three-match Test series against South Africa starting next month and if Rohit is able to make his bat do the talking in the longest format of the game, then it will only boost India's chances as the top-ranked Test side will be aiming to become the first team to win the prestigious World Test Championship.
