Forbes magazine released the list of 100 highest-earning Indians in the last year recently and it’s one dominated by celebrities from the film industry and sportspersons. There weren’t too many surprises on the top of the table, with Salman Khan ruling the roost for the third year in a row and Virat Kohli and Akshay Kumar being not too far behind as seen in the past few years.
The top-10 featured other names like Deepika Padukone, Mahendra Singh Dhoni, Aamir Khan, Amitabh Bachchan, Ranveer Singh and Ajay Devgn, all who are active in their respective professions and most of them are at the peak of their careers. The name that might surprise some would be ‘Master Blaster’ Sachin Tendulkar, who’s at No 9 with earnings of Rs 80 crore this year. Not just that, he is the only retiree out of the all the 100 celebrities in the list.
The legendary cricketer retired in the year 2013, but he has been in the top-10 of the Celebrity-100 list of highest-earning Indian celebrities, every year from 2014 to 2018. The 45-year-old has not ventured into commentating like other cricketers and his only cricket association is his role as an icon for the Indian Premier League team Mumbai Indians. So how does Sachin manage to make it to the list every single year or in other words, keep the cash flowing in?
Despite retirement, the former Indian captain’s market value in endorsements is still strong. Though he’s not the highest-paid Indian cricketer for endorsements any more like he used to be in the ‘90s and 2000s, Sachin still commands Rs 8-10 crore for 2-3 days of commitments for a brand, according to a report in Forbes. He’s only behind Indian captain Virat Kohli and former Indian captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni, who charge Rs 4.5 crore and 4 crore respectively per day for endorsements, the report claimed. Sachin is currently associated with 17 brands and you can do the math.
According to statistics from SRT Sports Management (SRTSM), a company founded by Sachin and his wife Anjali, his revenue from brands is expected to grow 2.3 times since his retirement despite a dip in the number of endorsements.
Apart from his endorsements, his app 100 MB which gives fans an opportunity to get up, close and personal with him and the 3D cricket game, Sachin Saga Cricket Champions, where players can step into the cricketing shoes of the ‘Master Blaster’ are also major revenue generators. Sachin also gets royalty for his book ‘Sachin Tendulkar: Playing It My Way’ and his biopic, ‘Sachin: A Billion Dreams.’
His partnerships/ joint ventures with a clothing brand True Blue, Internet of Things company Smartron and gaming platform SMAASH are some of the other platforms that have established his brand value.
Not to forget, Sachin enjoys a combined tally of 70 million followers across the social media platforms of Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and more which have also asserted his position on the digital platforms.
