Master blaster Sachin Tendulkar on Thursday turned up in Parliament, merely two days after being questioned for his absence by Samajwadi Party leader and MP Naresh Agrawal. It was the first time that the cricketer was attending the Rajya Sabha in the ongoing Monsoon session. Earlier on Tuesday, the Samajwadi MP had attacked the cricketing legend and Bollywood actor Rekha and asked them to resign from the House on matters concerning their non-attendance. "Sachin Tendulkar and Rekha should resign if they are not interested in the Parliament," Agrawal said in the House. Agrawal had questioned the Chair that if the nominated members are not present in the Parliament, why shouldn't the chair cancel their membership of the House. Following Agrawal’s comments, Tendulkar was seen attending the Rajya Sabha on Thursday.

Both Sachin and Rekha were nominated in 2012 by the previous Congress-led UPA government. However, does on-field record justify off-field guest appearances in Parliament?

Centuries on field, ducks in Parliament

While the national average of a Member of Parliament is 78%, Sachin’s average as an MP is 7%. He kickstarted his term in the Parliament on April 27, 2012 and until March 31, 2017, had attended only only 23 of the 348 days since his nomination. Furthermore, in his 17 sittings, Tendulkar has only asked 22 questions, proposed zero bills and maintained a constant duck in his participation in the the debates. The average question asked by MPs is 299 whereas average participation in debates is 72.

This wasn’t the first time that Samajwadi leader Naresh Agrawal had question the absence of celebrities in the Parliament. Earlier in March, he questioned Tendulkar and highlighted that “they never come to the House.”

Should Sachin quit for being a serial bunker MP?
